Step 1: What You Need to Cook Green Beans


1 pound fresh green beans, about 4 cups
1 1/4 cups water
1 saucepan that will fit the beans and water comfortably
Paring knife and cutting board (optional)
Colander
Step 2: How to Prepare Green Beans

Wash the beans thoroughly, making sure to rinse off all stray leaves and dirt.
You can either slice off the ends of each bean, or just break them off. discard the ends.
The beans can either be cooked whole, or you can slice them into pieces, depending on your preference.
Step 3: How to Cook Green Beans

Bring the water to a boil.
Add the green beans and return to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-high.
Cook 5 minutes, and remove a bean to test for doneness.
If the bean is not cooked enough for your taste, continue boiling for another 2 minutes.
Drain beans, using the colander.
Step 4: Green Bean Variations

Beans can be served plain, with butter, or sprinkled with herbs.
Saut 1/4 cup almonds in2 tablespoons butter and toss with beans for green beans almondine
Combine 2 cups cooked beans with 1 cup sautd mushrooms , 1/3 cup sour cream, and 2 teaspoons chopped basil
